The Big Lab
Our Scientific Application
We integrate of genomic, morphological, and ecological data to investigate how organisms respond to environmental variations, particularly changes in temperature and oceanographic conditions. The laboratory employs sequencing tools, comparative analyses, and quantitative approaches to generate evolutionary knowledge with impact on conservation, aquaculture, and biodiversity.

Research Lines
Molecular Biodiversity and DNA Barcoding
We examine molecular species identification through DNA barcoding and advanced morphological analyses to understand biodiversity and delimit species.
Gene Evolution and Biological Processes
We investigate the evolution of genes, proteins, and cell types associated with environmental adaptation, development, and physiological functions.
Comparative Genomics and Environmental Adaptation
We conduct studies on genetic variation, thermal adaptation, and the genome evolution structures in marine and terrestrial species using next-generation sequencing (NGS) tools.
Integrative Methodologies
Integrated Analysis Platforms
The laboratory combines complementary tools to obtain a comprehensive view of the organism:
Molecular: DNA/RNA extraction
Genomic: RNA-seq, genome assembly
Comparative: ortholog analysis, gene duplication, positive selection
Morphometric: geometric characterization of traits
Ecological: interpretation in the context of ocean currents and climate change
Integrative Adaptation Models
The laboratory develops evolutionary and environmental models that explain how species respond to thermal stress. Gene expression data, molecular variation, evolutionary history, and oceanographic conditions are integrated to interpret biological responses across multiple scales.
Study Systems and Environmental Adaptation
The laboratory uses model species that experience contrasting environmental conditions, particularly variations in marine temperature. These systems allow exploration of the genetic and evolutionary mechanisms responsible for thermal tolerance, a critical topic in future global warming scenarios.
